PEARLAND — In 2008, Pearland head volleyball coach John Turner reached the 500th career win milestone when the Lady Oilers beat the La Porte Lady Bulldogs 25-10, 25-8, 25-8. In 2011, the Lady Oilers handed Turner his 600th career win and once again, the victim was the Lady La Porte Lady Bulldogs. Turner was recognized for his accomplishment by the American Volleyball Coaches Association at the NCAA Women’s Final Four Volleyball Championships in San Antonio, Texas.

Last week on Tuesday, October 29, the Lady O's closed out the 2013 regular season with a sweep of the Pasadena Dobie Lady Longhorns 25-16, 25-17, 25-16 while handing Turner another monumental victory, career win No. 700.

Turner came to Pearland High School in 1993 and since that time, his Lady Oilers have never had a losing season. At the present time, he has compiled a 700-227 overall mark while his Pearland teams have advanced to the playoffs 17 out of the past 20 years.

While his coaching tenure has been at Pearland for the greater part of his coaching career, Turner saw his Class 4A Channelview team advance to the state volleyball tournament in 1988 and 1989 where the Falcons finished third and second respectively in the state.

This year's Pearland squad will advance to the Class 5A Region III playoffs with aspirations to win the region title and move on to the state volleyball tournament.

Turner has not only established one of the top volleyball programs in the Houston area, but he has also been instrumental in bringing the largest high school volleyball tournament in the nation to Pearland. Each year, the top teams in Texas, including defending state champions, invade the Pearland community to showcase the top volleyball talent from all across Texas just prior to the start of the season.

The Texas Volleyball Invitational has attracted as many as 84 teams. The 2013 tourney had 79 of the top teams in the state.

But the tournament is so much more than playing the game as Turner has directed the tournament to support the MD Anderson Hospital/Texas Children's Hospital/Side-Out Foundation in which over $65,000 has been raised and donated to these outstanding organizations.

The veteran coach was also instrumental in starting the Greater Houston Volleyball Coaches Association in 2011 and currently holds the position of Executive Director for that organization.

Turner's coaching career also includes stops at Channelview HS and and Baytown Lee.

He has had nine players named to the Texas Girls Coaches Association (TGCA) East All-Star team. He has had 57 players make the TGCA All-State team (95 GPA or higher). There have been 11 TGCA All-State players. There have been 11 players selected to the Greater Houston Volleyball Coaches Association All-Star team over the past four years.

Turner has been selected District "Coach of the Year" 10 times while being named Lone Star Region "Coach of the Year" on one occasion.

The program Turner has developed, while serving at three different high schools, has seen 167 players who have moved on to play at the collegiate level including club volleyball at Club Texas for 12 years.

"I think the most gratification I get from all the years that I have coached is how all my former players have moved on to give so much back to society in general." Turner said. "The lessons they say they learned while playing volleyball at Pearland prepared them for their 'real life' issues. That makes me feel honored that they really took to heart the passion, love, and dedication to a high work ethic level I instilled in them while playing for me.

"In essence, I could have never reached this milestone without the hard work of my players, coaches, and managers throughout my coaching career. They all played huge roles in each of the wins I recorded. To that, I am forever grateful to each of them."
